Information technology in health care, such as the EHR, patient portals, digitized medical devices, and wearables are becoming increasingly used to improve patient care. AI technology goes beyond that to perform tasks previously performed by humans, and is viewed by the authors to be a large-scale automation rather than a driver of large-scale job loss. This article discusses five approaches to augmentation, which blends the power of AI with the sophistication of human perception, empathy, and experience. By adopting an augmentation approach to implementing AI-enhanced care decisions, health care organizations can more effectively address the interests of multiple stakeholders.
