Alarming Survey Results Spark 7 System Changes to Buck Burnout
In 2016, the Roanoke, Virginia-based Carilion Clinic conducted a survey encompassing physician burnout and employee engagement among all medical members in its system, revealing that 59% of Carilion physician were experiencing high burnout. Using the AMA STEPS Forwards module, seven innovative ideas and initiatives were implemented in order to combat burnout: create a central well-being committee; celebrate successes and share updates; consider every member of the care team; enhance visibility and sharing between groups; offer administrative and managerial support; acknowledge the contribution of adverse events; follow through, revise and refine.
