Adaptation practice: teaching doctors how to cope with stress, anxiety and depression by developing resilience
Sherlock’s article, published in the British Journal of Medical Practitioners, aims to explore the acceptability and effectiveness of a six-month training course of Adaptation Practice, a behavioural programme of self-discipline designed to deal with stress, anxiety and depression, for doctors who showed signs of anxiety and depression. In a survey gauging interest in the course, 68% of physicians were openly willing to express in learning how to cope through the training course, hypothesized because the course was offered as postgraduate training with no suggestion of illness, treatment or stigma. With positive self-assessments and significant improvements in clinical assessments and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) scores, Adaption Practice was also shown to deem positive benefits.
