A Program for Reducing Depressive Symptoms and Suicidal Ideation in Medical Students

The authors of the following study, published in Academic Medicine, develop and evaluate an intervention aimed at reducing reported depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation. The intervention involving increased individual counseling for students, faculty education, and a specialized curriculum including lectures and a student handbook drastically reduced prevalence of reported depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation. The authors posit that programs providing specific mental health support for medical students may significantly enhance well-being for at-risk clinicians.
