The following brief from the American Medical Association provides high-level findings from a survey administered in 2016 to assess issues around prior authorization. The survey found that 22% of physicians and their staff spend more than 20 hours per week processing prior authorizations. Nearly 60% of physician surveyed reported waiting at least one business day for a prior authorization decision from health plans while 26% reported waiting at least 3 business days.
