Presidency of Victor J. Dzau, MD (2014-2026)

Victor Dzau served as the final president of the Institute of Medicine and oversaw its reconstitution as the National Academy of Medicine in 2015. He was elected by NAM members for a second, 6-year term as the first president of the new Academy in 2020. His presidency was marked by innovation in program design and communications, expansion of the Academy’s global role, growth in leadership and mentorship programs, and a focus on health equity and responsible application of advances in science and technology.

In July 2026, Dzau returned to Duke University as James B. Duke Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Chancellor Emeritus for Health Affairs, and Director of the Mandel Center for Hypertension and Atherosclerosis. He also serves as Chair of the G20 High-Level Panel on Financing Pandemic Preparedness and Response. Connect with him on LinkedIn

The NAM’s Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine program was conceptualized and launched by Victor Dzau in 2016. At the conclusion of his term as NAM president in 2026, program Scholars were named in his honor.
