As part of the National Academy of Medicine’s commitment to building leadership capacity across diverse disciplines to shape the future of health and medicine, the Office of Health Policy Fellowships and Leadership Programs administers a portfolio of highly regarded programs.
Fellowships & Programs
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellows
This program provides the nation’s most comprehensive fellowship experience at the nexus of health, science, and policy in Washington, DC. It is an outstanding opportunity for exceptional midcareer health professionals and behavioral and social scientists with an interest in health and health care policy promoting the health of the nation. Fellows participate in the policy process at the federal level and use that leadership experience to improve health, health care and health policy.
NAM Fellowships for Health Science Scholars
This program is designed for health science scholars who are 1-to-10 years out from completion of a residency or receipt of a doctoral degree to participate in the process by which the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (the National Academies) provide health advice to the nation. This direct involvement in health- and medicine-related work of the National Academies prepares early-career investigators to contribute to the future direction of health care throughout their careers while also accelerating their career development.
Emerging Leaders in Health and Medicine
This program began in 2016 to increase the NAM’s engagement with exceptional, interdisciplinary early- to mid-career professionals working in biomedical science, population health, health care, health policy, and related fields. The ELHM Program facilitates opportunities for mentorship, collaboration, and innovation between the emerging leaders, NAM members, and experts across sectors.
NAM Scholars in Diagnostic Excellence
Funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, this collaborative program in partnership with the Council of Medical Specialty Societies supports up to 10 scholars in a one-year, part-time remote experience. Scholars build upon the work of the National Academies consensus report, Improving Diagnosis in Health Care (2015), and propose the implementation of programs that will improve diagnosis and reduce diagnostic errors at the national level.
State Health Policy Fellowship
This program partners with states to place health professionals in state government offices and provide subject matter expertise and context to local policy deliberations. Fellows will learn to participate in state policy and political processes, and obtain the skills and knowledge necessary to influence policy throughout their careers.
Distinguished Nurse Scholar-in-Residence
The Nurse Scholar program is designed to assist outstanding nurse leaders to play a more prominent role in health policy development at the national level. The program seeks individuals who have the capacity and skills to bring issues of special interest in nursing to greater public understanding and policy attention.
International Fellowships
International Health Policy Fellowship
The NAM International Health Policy Fellowship program is designed for early- to mid-career scholars in the fields of bioethics, medical ethics and law, economics and health policy, and health care to experience and participate in health care or public health studies that improve care and access to care for patients in domestic and global health care systems.
NAM-HKU Fellowship in Global Health Leadership
The University of Hong Kong and the National Academy of Medicine have established the NAM-HKU Fellowship in Global Health Leadership. Since 2019, this program has provided a two-year training for early to mid-career scholars to learn and work at HKU School of Public Health and the NAM in areas under the umbrella of global health leadership.
Scholars in Global Women’s Health Research Program
The Scholars in Global Women’s Health Research program seeks to build capacity for women’s health research in low- and middle-income countries. It will leverage NAM’s membership and the extensive international network of the National Academies to attract individuals with high potential for emerging as successful principal investigators in women’s health research. The Scholars selected for the program will be provided with training to be delivered by NAM’s partner on the program, the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), as well as mentorship and networking opportunities to be facilitated by NAM, to help them achieve this goal.
