Healthcare decarbonization efforts are a cornerstone of Premier’s sustainability strategy. By assessing Premier Inc.’s carbon footprint and managing climate risk, Premier is using a phased approach to understand its baseline environmental impact as an organization, establish effective governance and oversight structures, and identify the appropriate next steps to transition to a low-carbon economy:
2022: Conducted first greenhouse gas (GHG) assessment of Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions
2023: Continued to streamline Scope 1 and Scope 2 GHG assessments
2024: Began assessing relevance and materiality of Scope 3 emission categories
Premier and many of its member health systems also joined the White House Office of Climate Change and Health Equity’s Healthcare Sector Climate Pledge to reduce its organizations’ emissions by 50% by 2030 and to “net zero” by 2050.
