With Professor Cassie Thiel, the Association of Medical Device Reprocessors created an emissions calculator to help hospitals track reductions in emissions by using regulated reprocessed medical devices labelled for “single-use.” Calculating Scope 3 emissions is extremely difficult – but made simple with this calculator. AMDR used data from 8 peer reviewed life cycle assessments comparing original to reprocessed devices that found on average 41% reduction from the use of reprocessed devices. Hospitals can also see how much emissions their use of virgin devices causes that could have been avoided with reprocessing. AMDR provides resources for sustainability managers at hospitals – and the journalists and policy makers who impact and cover their work – to make it easier to understand and document cost savings and greenhouse gas emissions reductions by re-using FDA regulated, reprocessed single-use medical devices.
